In BurntOut, the player prepares for the medical environment by taking on the role of a medical student and engaging in clinical and professional development challenges. The simulation delivers preparatory guidance and an opportunity to practice, which leads to improved health and resiliency when facing similar challenges later.
Physician burnout is an issue for both provider and patient. In simulated clinic scenarios, future doctors become familiar with the challenges they will face in the medical environment, learn to recognize poor coping strategies, and develop resilience to the stresses of clinical practice. In VR, they experience the outcomes of a poor choice in a safe, fictional environment. Being prepared, they are better able to provide high-quality care.
